Four hundred years ago, kanna was already a hot commodity.
Sceletium, also known as kanna, was fermented, dried, and traded along routes hundreds of miles long. By the 1600s, it had become famous enough to reach far beyond South Africa.
By 1610, kanna was so valuable that two ships stopped at the Cape of Good Hope expressly to collect kanna. Six years later, an English merchant sent a root to London and reported that in Japan it was worth its weight in silver. By the early 1700s, Sceletium was being cultivated in England.
Peter Kolb, a German astronomer stationed at the Cape, wrote of it admiringly in 1719.
Sceletium was not merely encountered. It was traded, adopted and praised.
A plant packed with alkaloids.
Sceletium is a small South African succulent. When a leaf dies, the flesh disappears, and the veins remain as a fine skeletal lattice. That "skeleton" gives Sceletium its name.
Inside the plant are more than twenty-five known mesembrine-type alkaloids. Just as coffee has caffeine, Sceletium has mesembrine and mesembrenone as its two main compounds. The ratio between them varies from plant to plant — which is why we standardize the extract, and why we state the alkaloid content on the label.
The future is coming soon.
We are starting to see products made with Sceletium in the marketplace, spearheading a new generation of functional products.
That's why we are proud to present Functional Berries: 150 mg of Sceletium tortuosum extract (or kanna), providing 1.5 mg mesembrine-type alkaloids, in a single-serving strawberry shot.
